Warning: Don’t Play While Hungry

I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent plenty of episodes of Iron Chef marveling at how Morimoto can take anything on the altar and turn it into some sort of sushi. And make it look impeccable. (Again, just me? Be honest.)

You channel your inner Iron Chef with Bento Blocks, coming on January 29th of next year. From SOMETIMES LIMITED, an independent studio in New Zealand, the game promises satisfying culinary puzzle perfection, and after playing the demo, I’m certainly hooked.

You begin with ingredients on one side of the screen, and your bento box on the other. Sometimes, it was just as simple as cutting and fitting just rice into a space, but soon other ingredients were added, like shrimp and edamame.

With your trusty chef knife, your goal is to slice the ingredients with the fewest cuts and set them into your bento box. Sounds easy, right?

With each stage in the demo, the team introduces new mechanics. At the start, you have one knife that’s a particular size, and you can’t rotate it, forcing you to think strategically about what you’re doing. (And it’s oh-so-satisfying.) By the end of the demo, though, you’re able to experience doing the levels with two knives, or even the ability to rotate them.

All in all, it has the makings of a great puzzle game with easy-to-pick-up mechanics and enough of a challenge to give your brain a good workout as you strive to get three-star ratings in every level!

A demo for Bento Blocks is available now on Steam! Let me know if you’ve given it a try.
